Step Back to 1964…

The year our stunning Buick Skylark Convertible rolled off the production line in the USA, Australia was groovin’ through its own iconic moments. To get you in the mood for a vintage ride, here are a few things that were happening Down Under in 1964:

🧑‍🎤 The Beatles toured Australia
Screaming fans. Pouring rain. A cultural moment! Beatlemania hit Aussie shores, drawing crowds in the tens of thousands across Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

📺 TV was still black and white
Colour TV wouldn’t arrive until the mid-70s. In 1964, Australians were watching The Adventures of Robin Hood, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, and the very first episodes of Play School.

🛍️ The decimal currency decision was made
Australia was still using pounds, shillings, and pence—but 1964 was the year the government announced it would switch to dollars and cents (which finally happened in 1966).

🎓 Higher education changed forever
The Menzies government introduced the Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme, opening university access to thousands of Australians.

🚘 Cars were BIG, bold, and beautiful
Holdens ruled the roads, the Ford Falcon was the new kid on the block, and convertibles like our Buick Skylark were the height of luxury and style.

🍔 First Australian Burger King (Hungry Jack’s)
Fast food was on the rise. Though Macca’s didn’t arrive until 1971, the seeds of fast-food culture were being planted.

💿 The #1 song in Australia:
🎶 I Want to Hold Your Hand – The Beatles
…and we like to think they were singing it with the top down, cruising like a rockstar.
