Campbell Town Tasmania

Campbell Town: Explore. Stay. Discover.
The Heart of Tasmania — the hidden gem you’ve been missing.

Perfectly positioned between Hobart and Launceston, Campbell Town has long been seen as a convenient halfway stop. But it’s so much more than that — it’s a town full of charm, character, and history, waiting for you to slow down and take a closer look. This peaceful rural town offers more than just a stretch of the legs or a snack break. It’s a place rich in stories, alive with culture, and filled with moments that reward those who choose to pause, explore, and stay a while.

The original custodians of this land were the Tyerrernotepanner (chera-noti-pahner) Clan of the North Midlands Nation. These nomadic people moved between the Central Plateau and Eastern Tiers, camping near what is now Campbell Town, Cleveland, Conara, and the South Esk River. Early colonists referred to them as the Stony Creek Tribe, after a nearby stream at Llewellyn. They called this area norerytymonerler or parndokenne. The hills above town were Lukargener Purntobebenner, and the Elizabeth River was known as parndokennerlyerpinder. As settlers claimed the fertile Midlands in the early 1800s, the Tyerrernotepanner were displaced. Access to hunting grounds was lost, and the clan suffered greatly through conflict, violence, and disease. During the Black War, they resisted fiercely, with leaders like Memerlannerlargenna and Eumarrah remembered for their courage. Tragically, the last of the clan were exiled from their homeland to Wybalenna and Oyster Cove, where many perished in poor conditions.

Campbell Town was established in 1826 as one of four key garrison towns connecting north and south. Today, its history lingers in every building and street. Cross the convict-built Red Bridge — the oldest surviving brick arch bridge in Australia, still part of the National Highway. Walk the Convict Brick Trail, a moving tribute to the individuals who helped build the colony. Wander along the Elizabeth River or unwind in our lovely parks and picnic spots. Stay the night under the stars at our free riverside campsite, or relax in one of our charming Airbnbs, including a stunning heritage-listed church. Enjoy friendly hospitality at the local pub, where farmers, travellers, and locals come together over a hearty meal and a cold drink.

Browse The Book Cellar, one of the world’s “150 bookshops to visit before you die,” then explore our shops filled with unique, quality, and quirky finds. Visit local galleries, hunt for antiques, and admire chainsaw sculptures by Eddie Freeman, each carving telling a story of the land and its people.

Built in 1857 for the Scottish Presbyterian community, St Andrew’s Church was once a centre of spiritual and social life. After decades of silence, it now opens its doors once more. Lovingly restored, The Church invites you inside to experience its story — a gentle slideshow brings the history of Pantukina / Campbell Town to life, from pre-colonial times to the present. Grab a free walking or driving tour map, and discover hidden spots, scenic views, and heritage treasures.

We’re reimagining Campbell Town — not as a pit stop, but as a true destination. Through local events, festivals, markets, live music, and community experiences, we’re sharing the real heart and soul of our town. And we’re not just promoting our own small businesses — we’re supporting the whole region. When we run events, we’ll also highlight what’s happening nearby, so you can make a whole weekend of it.

Next time you’re on the Midland Highway, don’t just pass through. Take a break from the ordinary.
